European Geophysical Society 26th General Assembly Nice, France, 22-26 April 2002

  Session NP 7:

Open session on dynamical system concepts and their application in geophysics.

  Convenor: Henk Dijkstra ( H.A.Dijkstra@phys.uu.nl)

  Co-Convenor: Gerrit Lohmann ( gerrit.lohmann@dkrz.de),

In recent years, the systematic methodology of dynamical
systems theory has found widespread application in
meteorology, physical oceanography, climate dynamics and
other areas of geophysics. Its main strength is that fundamental
questions on complex nonlinear temporal/spatial
behavior of particular systems can be tackled. In this session, we aim to

  (i) assess the status of the specific tools,
(ii) review the results which have been obtained in specific areas and
(iii) identify potential new areas of application.
